Flora MacDonald's Lament

Flora MacDonald's Lament

ID: QZP40_CARD_2631 DESCRIPTION: One of a series of Valentine's postcards featuring Bonnie Prince Charlie and well known songs, this image was taken from the painting by George W. Joy. He was born in Dublin, and reached the height of his popularity in the 1890s, with themes of contemporary life, historical events and portraits. This detail shows Bonnie Prince Charlie biding farewell to Flora MacDonald at MacNab's Inn on 30th June 1746 in Portree, Skye. Flora's involvement with Charles Edward Stuart during his time in the Hebrides after defeat at Culloden has been much romanticised, but even at the time she was lauded for her bravery in successfully assisting the Prince to evade government troops by crossing the Minch from Benbecula to Skye. Flora MacDonald's Lament was written by James Hogg, the Ettrick shepherd, to a tune by Neil Gow junior PLACENAME: Portree DISTRICT: Skye OLD COUNTY/PARISH: INVERNESS: Portree CREATOR (AV): J.
