Map of Drove Roads of Scotland

Map of Drove Roads of Scotland

ID: AB_HALDANE_DROVE_ROADS DESCRIPTION: This map shows droving roads all over Scotland, it is not comprehensive but does show all the major routes. Drove roads were special routes along which cattle could be moved "on the hoof" (i.e. on foot). The majority of these routes enabled livestock to be brought from the Highlands and Islands to the Lowlands and England although there were drove roads in the Borders area too. Once the animals had arrived at the market town they were fattened and sold for slaughter. The last cattle were transported in this way early in the 20th century, though long before this railways and steam ships had offered a quicker alternative. PLACENAME: Scotland CREATOR (AV): A.R.B.
