William Simpson served as provost of Inverness from 1846 to 1852. (A plaque below the painting gives the dates as 1847-1852)
According to the Inverness Journal of 20 August 1847 Provost Simpson was 'entertained to a public dinner in the Caledonian Hotel as a mark of respect for his public character and private worth'.
