ID:GB1796_859_20_1094DESCRIPTION:This thatched house, probably at Luib in Skye, was photographed by M.E.M. Donaldson in the first half of the 20th century.
A thatched roof was based on a wooden frame resting on the house walls. It was cheap and light, so it did not put unnecessary weight stress on the walls. Various materials were used such as straw, heather and bent grass, depending on local availability. The thatch was secured with old fishing net or twine, often anchored by large stones which can be seen clearly in this photograph.
