ID:HCD00856DESCRIPTION:Even by the end of the 19th century, Oban was a thriving town with a population of around 5000, thanks mainly to the steamer trade and the railway, as well as its picturesque setting. It remains the principal town in Argyll and the main port for the islands on the west coast, as well as a busy tourist destination, although perhaps not as fashionable as it once was. Duncan Macpherson must have visited before he took up residence in Kyle of Lochalsh in 1912
