ID:HC_PLANNING_07_014_0501DESCRIPTION:Old St Peter's Church in Thurso is thought to be one of the oldest churches in Caithness and was founded by Gilbert, Bishop of Caithness (1222-1245). Most of what remains of the church dates from the 16th and 17th centuries although the building was still in use as a parish church until 1832. Incidents from the church's past include a bloody battle against an Irish raider in 1649 and boys sitting in (and sometimes falling from) the rafters while listening to sermons.PLACENAME:ThursoOLD COUNTY/PARISH:CAITHNESS: ThursoCREATOR (AV):T.
