Letter concerning the railway construction of Skye Marble Ltd, page 1

ID: Z_CDT_19_MEP4445_12_1 DESCRIPTION: The letter-writer is a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and a Director of Skye Marble Ltd. Skye Marble Ltd began quarrying marble in Strath, using Belgian workers, in 1904. They later built a railway that linked the quarries at Kilbride with the pier at Broadford. The letter states that, so far, Skye Marble Ltd have spent £30,000 on four miles of railway and bridge, heavy construction plant and machinery at the two quarries at Kilbride. He says that a further £10,000 will be needed for additional quarries, workmen's houses and clubrooms etc. At the time of writing £250 a month in wages were being paid out.
