Underneath the awning at Grantown, 1958

ID: PC_HRS_STATIONS_001_692 DESCRIPTION: An evocative view from underneath awning at Grantown station. Grantown was opened on 3 August 1863 on the original main line to Perth and the south. The new, more direct, main line via Carr Bridge was opened in July 1897 leaving the Forres to Aviemore line as a cross-county route (although it still had its moments, particularly during the two World Wars.) The station became 'Grantown on Spey' in the early summer of 1912 and British Railways added the suffix 'West'. The station closed on 18 July 1965 although the Strathspey Railway has plans for it to become their northern terminus.
