ID: PC_HRS_STATIONS_001_1245 DESCRIPTION: A view of Spean Bridge Station from the bridge. HR 52 is on train in the down platform. Originally numbered 15 by the Highland Railway, HR 52 was renumbered three times by the Highland Railway: to 52 in December 1900; to 52A in March 1917; and to 52B in August 1922. Between 1901 and 1923 it carried the name 'Fortrose'. After the grouping it lost its name and became LMS 15016. It was eventually withdrawn in May 1927. Spean Bridge station was originally opened as the southern terminus of the Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway (I&FAR) which was authorised in August 1896. The I&FAR ran out of money in May 1903, before the line had opened, and the Highland Railway took over its operation (the Highland was keen to keep their rival, the North British Railway (NBR), away from Inverness). This arrangement lasted until July 1907 when the Highland pulled out and was succeeded by the NBR. The line was closed on 31 October 1911 but re-opened on 1 August 1913. Twelve months later it was purchased by the NBR. The line closed to passenger traffic on 1 December 1933 and to goods on 1 January 1947. An engine shed was built here but never used, the one at Fort Augustus being utilised instead.
