'Ben Alder', a Small Ben class locomotive, was built in July 1898, she went on to carry the LMS number 14398 and she was given the number 54398 by British Railways. Withdrawn from service in February 1953, it was intended that 'Ben Alder' should be preserved but she was eventually scrapped in 1966. Thurso station was opened on 28 July 1874 as the terminus of the Thurso Branch of the Sutherland and Caithness Railway which was operated, and later absorbed by, the Highland Railway. It is still served by regular services and is the most northerly station in Britain.
