Loch Maree

Loch Maree

ID: PC_JACKWATSON_022 DESCRIPTION: A photograph containing a black and white view up Loch Maree, in Wester Ross. Measuring 20 km in length and with a maximum width of 4 km, it is Scotlands fourth largest fresh-water loch. Its name is a translation of the Gaelic, Loch Ma-ruibhe, after the Irish Saint Maol Rubha, who founded the monastery at Applecross in 672. The ruins of a chapel and graveyard on Isle Maree are believed to have been the saint's hermitage for a number of years. Loch Maree is nestled amongst some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery and is bordered on its north shore by Slioch, and Beinn Eighe to the south.
