Clunie Memorial Arch, Loch Faskally

Clunie Memorial Arch, Loch Faskally

ID: PC_JMSTRACHAN_285 DESCRIPTION: Loch Faskally is a man-made reservoir to the north of Pitlochry, and is part of the Tummel Hydro Electric Power scheme. Work started on the scheme in the 1930s, and there are now several power stations and reservoirs between Pitlochry in the east, Dalwhinnie in the north and Rannoch Moor in the west. Loch Faskally is the last reservoir in the Tummel Hydro Electric Power Scheme. Water flowing from Loch Tummel passes through a tunnel to the Clunie Power Station before reaching the Pitlochry Power Station on Loch Faskally. Loch Faskally is retained behind Pitlochry Dam, which was built between 1947-50. The Dam also hosts a fish-ladder, which allows salmon passage upriver to their spawning grounds. The Clunie Memorial Arch is located on the northwest side of Loch Faskally. It was built to the same dimensions of the tunnel that carries water between Loch Tummel and the Clunie Power Station. The tunnel itself measures 2791 metres (9158 ft) in length and 400,000 tons of rock were removed during its construction.
