ID:PC_MACLEAN_HARRIS&LEWIS09_30DESCRIPTION:Uig is a small settlement strung out around Uig Bay near the north end of the Trotternish peninsula on Skye. The road between Uig and Portree was completed in 1812 and the pier by 1840. A Caledonian MacBrayne ferry sails from here to Tarbert on Harris and to Lochmaddy on North Uist. The first car ferry in the 1960s used a hoist and side ramps to load vehicles. This was a very time consuming process. The pier was upgraded in the 1980s allowing the routes from Uig to be covered by roll-on roll-off ferries.
The Skye Brewery is also located in Uig.PLACENAME:UigDISTRICT:SkyeOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: SnizortCREATOR (AV):Clare MacleanDATE OF IMAGE:10 July 2009PERIOD:2000sSOURCE:Clare MacleanAsset ID:29249KEYWORDS:
