Culloden Moor

Culloden Moor

ID: PC_PRISCUS_BPC6458 DESCRIPTION: This photograph was taken by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) and was used to illustrate talks he gave on Highland history. The following text is taken from Washington Wilson's own lecture notes on the Jacobite Rising of 1745-46. The original position was taken up on Culloden Moor. The troops were exhausted and hungry. The Prince had only a little bread and whisky. It was proposed to cross the Nairn and take up a position where the cavalry could not follow. The Prince obstinately determined to fight where they were, the worst position conceivable for the Highland army.
