ID:PC_STAND_CATH_018DESCRIPTION:Bishop Arthur John Maclean was ordained as Bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness in the Scottish Episcopal Church in December 1904. The full-colour portrait, now in the possession of Inverness Museum, now hangs on the staircase of the original part of Eden Court.
Born in 1858, Maclean attended King's College, Cambridge from 1876 to 1883. He served first in the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles, and later as Priest-in-charge at Portree. He was head of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Assyrian Mission from 1886 to 1891. Maclean was awarded a Doctor of Divinity by Glasgow University in 1904, having been made head of the Theological College in Edinburgh in the previous year. He served as Bishop in Moray, Ross and Caithness from 1904 until his death in 1943. He was Primus of the Church from 1935.
In Inverness his residence was Eden Court, the Bishop's Palace close to the St Andrew's Cathedral on the riverside in Inverness. He was a prolific author on religious topics as well as writing about the Syriac language. Amongst his most significant achievements was as the chief architect of the Scottish Prayer Book, for use in the Scottish Episcopal Church. This was published in 1929, and served the Church until the end of the 1960s when other versions of parts of the Prayer Book, e.g. the Liturgy, started to be published and widely used.
His biography was published in 1950, written by W. G. S. Snow.PLACENAME:InvernessOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: Inverness and BonaCOLLECTION:St Andrew's Cathedral, InvernessAsset ID:30014KEYWORDS:
