Dunbeath Strath is situated on the south east coast of Caithness, about 23 miles from the town of Wick. At the mouth of Dunbeath Strath sits the village of Dunbeath, birthplace of the well-known Scottish author Neil M. Gunn. One of the author's books, 'Highland River', was based around the Strath and the river that runs through it, Dunbeath Water. The Strath, having been inhabited for thousands of years, is also famous for being a site of archaeological interest. A heritage trail now runs through the area and points of interest on the walk include an old Meal Mill, a standing stone, Dunbeath Broch, a chambered cairn, an old crofting settlement, and the Prisoner's Leap Gorge.PLACENAME:DunbeathDISTRICT:Caithness - SouthernOLD COUNTY/PARISH:CAITHNESS: LatheronDATE OF IMAGE:1931PERIOD:1930sSOURCE:W GordonCOLLECTION:Winnie Gordon (photographs)Asset ID:30318KEYWORDS:
