ID:PC_WMORRISON_020DESCRIPTION:This photograph of Annie Macleod was taken at Scourie, however, the back of the photo indicates that she lived in Watten.
The village of Scourie lies on the west coast of Sutherland at the head of Scourie Bay about half way between Durness and Ullapool. Due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream palm trees are able to grow in the gardens of Scourie House. Scourie was the birthplace of Hugh Mackay, a 17th century British General who served during the 1688 Glorious Revolution.
Watten lies on the road between Wick and Thurso in Caithness. The name probably derives from the Old Norse 'vatn' meaning water. Nearby Loch Watten is well known for its brown trout fishing.PLACENAME:ScourieDISTRICT:Eddrachillis and DurnessOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: EddrachillisSOURCE:Willie MorrisonCOLLECTION:Willie Morrison ArchiveAsset ID:30516KEYWORDS:
