ID:PC_WMORRISON_027DESCRIPTION:The Cape Wrath Hotel stands on a peninsula overlooking the Kyle of Durness in Sutherland. Due to the variety of plants and animals, the area is a site of special scientific interest supervised by SNH.
Cape Wrath is the most north westerly point on mainland Scotland and the name derives from the Old Norse for a turning point. The lighthouse at the point was built by Robert Stevenson in 1828 and a large part of the Cape is used by the Ministry of Defence as a bombing and targeting range. The MoD also run a programme to monitor the effects of their work on the local environment.PLACENAME:KeoldaleDISTRICT:Eddrachillis and DurnessOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: DurnessSOURCE:Willie MorrisonCOLLECTION:Willie Morrison ArchiveAsset ID:30522KEYWORDS:
