Dance at Durness Village Hall, 1968

Dance at Durness Village Hall, 1968

ID: PC_WMORRISON_056 DESCRIPTION: Dancers at Durness Village Hall in December 1968. The hall has now been superseded by a new building opened in August 2001. The old hall needed extensive repair work and was no longer able to provide the facilities required by the local community. Durness is a crofting township in northwest Sutherland. As well as crofting, the local economy relies on fish farming, sheep and tourism; the area is good for sea trout fishing, walking and sailing. In the 19th century when clearances were proposed the people of the Durness area resisted. Military intervention ensured that clearances did go ahead but to a lesser extent than originally planned PLACENAME: Durness DISTRICT: Eddrachillis and Durness OLD COUNTY/PARISH: SUTHERLAND: Durness DATE OF IMAGE: 1968 PERIOD: 1960s SOURCE: Willie Morrison COLLECTION: Willie Morrison Archive Asset ID: 30543 KEYWORDS:
