ID: QZP40_82_VOLI_P032 DESCRIPTION: James Logan's "The Clans of the Scottish Highlands" was published to celebrate the centenary of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. It was illustrated by Robert R McIan. The MacDonalds of Glencoe are descended from Iain Fraoch, natural son of Angus Og and brother of John, 1st Lord of the Isles. Although the Glencoe MacDonalds supported their kinsmen and friends when necessary, they seem to have been a small, fairly peaceful clan without expansionist ambitions. They are perhaps best known because of the Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the Argyll regiment, under the command of Campbell of Glenlyon, was sent by the Government to kill them. The Government wanted to make an example of the MacDonalds for not pledging an oath to William III. In fact, MacIain did pledge his loyalty to King William, although he exceeded the deadline by several days. The Argyll troops were billeted with the people of Glencoe thirteen days prior to the massacre. The MacDonalds gave them shelter but were attacked by them while they slept. However, tradition has it that the troops warned many in good time, so that most escaped and only 38 were killed. As massacres go, it was a small one, but it is remembered because of the manner in which it was conducted PLACENAME: N/A CREATOR (AV): Robert R McIan DATE OF IMAGE: 1845 PERIOD: 1840s SOURCE: Highland Libraries COLLECTION: The Clans of the Scottish Highlands Asset ID: 30883 KEYWORDS:
