ID:QZP40_159_270DESCRIPTION:James Graham, Marquis of Montrose was one of the four noblemen who were responsible for drawing up the National Covenant in Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, in 1638. They opposed Charles I's attempts to have Episcopalianism established in Scotland over Presbyterianism. The Covenant was a document signed by people pledging to defend Scotland's rights in matters relating to Church and State. They demanded changes in the way Scotland was governed and sought to limit the power of the King. Montrose, however, was a moderate and became increasingly concerned about the more radical Covenanters. This concern led him to side with Charles I against the Covenanters and Cromwell's army.
As head of Royalist forces in Scotland, Montrose won several battles across the Highlands before being ordered to disband his forces and flee to France. He returned to Scotland to avenge the death of Charles I but was captured at Carbisdale and held at Ardvreck Castle before being hanged in Edinburgh.
