Rothesay Castle, situated on the Isle of Bute and built during the thirteenth century, was ransacked by the English in 1335 under the command of Lord Darcy, Lord Justice of Ireland. Shortly afterwards, it was recovered by the people of Arran and Bute and in later years became a royal residence. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the castle was burnt by the Marquis of Argyll.
