ID:QZP40_407_P080DESCRIPTION:This illustration of the 'Church of I-Colm-Kill' - Iona Abbey - is from 'Tours in Scotland 1747, 1750, 1760' by Richard Pococke, Bishop of Meath, published by the Scottish History Society, 1887.
The Benedictine Abbey of Iona dates from the 12th to 13th centuries although there had been a religious community on Iona since the time of St Columba who came over from Ireland around 563 AD.
Monastic worship on Iona ended with the Reformation in 1560 and it was not until 1910 that the abbey church was restored for worship. Therefore, at the time of Pococke's tour in 1760, it was still in a ruinous state. Restoration continued throughout the 20th century. The Ionian Community was set up in 1938 and the remaining monastic buildings were fully restored. Today the Abbey is visited by thousands each summer as well as accommodating a number of guests on a weekly basisPLACENAME:Iona AbbeyDISTRICT:MullOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ARGYLL: Kilfinchen and KilvickeonDATE OF IMAGE:1887PERIOD:1760sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Fraser Mackintosh Collection (illustrations)Asset ID:31203KEYWORDS:
