ID:QZP40_468_P053DESCRIPTION:This illustration was taken from "Argyll's Highlands" by Cuthbert Bede. It shows Dunyveg Castle, near Port Ellen, on the east coast of Islay. The ruins probably date from the sixteenth century, but there may have been a fort here since the 1200s. There is evidence to suggest that it was a stronghold of the Lords of the Isles during the fourteenth century. Once owned by the MacDonalds of Dunyveg, it later became an important military and political base.
The name 'Dunyveg' means 'fort of the little ships' and refers to the fact that the castle had a seagate as an entrance, in addition to its land entrancePLACENAME:IslayOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ARGYLL: Kildalton and OaDATE OF IMAGE:1902SOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Fraser Mackintosh Collection (photographs)Asset ID:31270KEYWORDS:
