Finlaggan Castle and Eilean-na-comhairle, Islay

ID: QZP40_468_P060 DESCRIPTION: This illustration was taken from "Argyll's Highlands" by Cuthbert Bede. It shows Finlaggan Castle and Eilean-na-comhairle on the island of Islay. Finlaggan Castle was the ancient seat and parliament of The Lord of the Isles. Situated on the islet of Eilean Mor, the castle consisted of various unfortified domestic buildings and had neither tower or curtain wall. Eilean-na-comhairle lies about 50 metres off the south tip of Eilean Mor. Its name translates as 'Council Isle', so-called because the Lords of the Isles held court here, according to the laws made by Reginald, son of Somerled, ancestor of the MacDonalds. The isle was once connected to Eilean Mor by a stone causeway, now submerged under Loch Finlaggan PLACENAME: Port Askaig DISTRICT: Islay OLD COUNTY/PARISH: ARGYLL: Killarrow and Kilmeny DATE OF IMAGE: 1902 SOURCE: Highland Libraries COLLECTION: Fraser Mackintosh Collection (photographs) Asset ID: 31273 KEYWORDS:
