Kilravock Castle

Kilravock Castle

ID: QZP40_784_P019 DESCRIPTION: Kilravock Castle was built in around 1460 by the Rose family of Nairnshire. A licence was granted for the building of the castle by John, Lord of the Isles and the Earl of Ross. The castle stands about 5 miles south west of Nairn, close to Cawdor Castle, overlooking the River Nairn. It is thought that the castle was designed by the designer of Cawdor Castle, as the same mason's marks are found in the doorway stonework of both castles. Notable visitors to the castle include Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Duke of Cumberland, and Robert Burns.
