In September 1715, John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, declared his support for James Francis Edward Stewart, the Old Pretender, and marched south with an army of almost 12,000 men. John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, was put in charge of 4,000 pro-Hanovarian men and told to stop Mar from moving any further south than the Forth. The two armies met at Sheriffmuir, near Dunblane, on 13 November 1715.
The right flank of Mar's army attacked the left flank of Argyll's army so ferociously that they were forced to flee to Stirling. Meanwhile, the right flank of Argyll's army had pushed the left flank of Mar's army into retreat. With both sides' left flanks defeated Mar pulled back to Perth and Argyll pulled back to Dunblane.
Despite his superior numbers, Mar failed to finish off Argyll and this caused the French and Spanish to withdraw their offered support. Argyll won the battle on propaganda terms, there was a faltering of support for the Jacobites and the rebellion disintegrated.
