ID:QZP40_1480_19DESCRIPTION:Illustration of Invermoriston Castle, visited by Herbert Byng Hall in his book 'Highland Sports and Highland Quarters'.
The ancient castle of Glenmoriston, or Invermoriston, was built by John Grant between 1440 and 1450. During the Jacobite Rising of 1715 the castle was burnt down by government troops and the lands forfeited to the Crown. The land was bought back and a new structure built but was also burnt down in the 1745 Jacobite Rising and the lands again forfeited to the Crown.
The Grants of Glenmoriston were the only Grants to fight on the Jacobite side and their name was prominent on the Bill of Punishment. Their name was later mysteriously erased and the Grants reclaimed the landPLACENAME:InvermoristonDISTRICT:AirdOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: Urquhart and GlenmoristonDATE OF IMAGE:1848PERIOD:1840sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Fraser Mackintosh Collection (illustrations)Asset ID:31458KEYWORDS:
