Cill-Trolla or Cinn Trolla Broch, Brora, Sutherland

ID: QZP40_2475_P095A DESCRIPTION: Cill-Trolla or Cinn Trolla Broch lies near Kintradwell in Brora, Sutherland. It is unusual in that when it was originally excavated in the latter half of the 19th century, it was found that the entrance door was 2.1 metres high. This contrasted greatly with the low entrances found on most other brochs. Two thousand years ago brochs were widespread throughout northern and western Scotland. They may have been built to protect the local population in times of threat. They were constructed with two concentric stone walls bonded by rows of slabs which formed galleries. Steps within the walls led to upper timber floors.
