Interior of Cill-Trolla or Cinn Trolla Broch, Brora, Sutherland
ID:QZP40_2475_P096DESCRIPTION:This illustration shows part of a chamber within the Cill-Trolla or Cinn Trolla Broch near Kintradwell, Brora, Sutherland. The illustration is from 'Archaeologia Scotica, or Transactions of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland', Vol V - Part I, Edinburgh, 1873.
Two thousand years ago brochs were widespread throughout northern and western Scotland. They may have been built to protect the local population in times of threat. They were constructed with two concentric stone walls bonded by rows of slabs which formed galleries. Steps within the walls led to upper timber floors.
The illustration shows an example of an early horizontal arch. The arch shape is achieved by placing the overlapping slabs in a backwards sloping manner until they reach the lintel at the topPLACENAME:KintradwellDISTRICT:Kildonan, Loth and ClyneOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: LothDATE OF IMAGE:1873PERIOD:500BC - 100sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Fraser Mackintosh Collection (illustrations)Asset ID:31713KEYWORDS:
