ID:QZP40_CARD_0035DESCRIPTION:Helmsdale is situated on the east coast of Sutherland. Before the beginning of the 19th century there were only a few cottages and an inn here but a large village, planned by the Duchess of Sutherland, was built in 1818 to house tenants evicted to make way for sheep. The mouth of the River Helmsdale forms a natural harbour and the town thrived as a centre for herring fishing until World War I. Fishing has since declined and Helmsdale is now a centre for local shopping and tourism.PLACENAME:HelmsdaleOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: KildonanSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:31918KEYWORDS:
