ID:QZP40_CARD_0075DESCRIPTION:Lairg is a village in central Sutherland situated at the south east end of Loch Shin. It developed because of its position at a junction of five roads and with the coming of the railway. Livestock was marketed here and limestone quarried nearby. It is now a tourist centre. Loch Shin and the River Shin are popular with anglers.
In the background is the hydro-electric dam between Loch Shin and Little Loch Shin and which raised the water level of Loch Shin about 11 metres. The power station became operational in 1960 and brought electricity for the first time to the north of ScotlandPLACENAME:LairgOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: LairgDATE OF IMAGE:1973PERIOD:1970sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:31963KEYWORDS:
