Situated at the head of Loch Sligachan, on the main route through Skye, the hotel has long been a base for walkers and climbers. Many of the famous pioneers of the Cuillin Hills are said to have used the hotel, including the Pilkington Brothers and Sheriff Nicolson.
Sligachan originally existed half a mile closer to the head of Loch Sligachan, on the site of a natural ford. It is from this that the place takes its name 'Sligachan', meaning 'small shells' in the Gaelic languagePLACENAME:SligachanDISTRICT:SkyeOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: BracadalePERIOD:1920s; 1930sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:31993KEYWORDS:
