A crofter's house at Mallaig

ID: QZP40_CARD_0245 DESCRIPTION: A crofter's house at Mallaig. A croft house is a low house in which Highland tenant farmers lived. Croft houses consisted of two sections, one room for the crofter and his family and a barn for the cattle. A fire was usually set in the middle of the room, to maximise the level of warmth in the house. Thatched roofs, small doors and small chimneys all helped to retain heat in the croft house, but also resulted in a smoky environment PLACENAME: Mallaig DISTRICT: Lochaber OLD COUNTY/PARISH: INVERNESS: Glenelg PERIOD: 1890s SOURCE: Highland Libraries COLLECTION: Highland Libraries' Postcard Collection Asset ID: 32145 KEYWORDS:
