ID:QZP40_CARD_0484DESCRIPTION:Loch Shieldaig is a small and sheltered inlet of Loch Gairloch. The building at the head of the loch is Shieldaig Lodge, a Victorian shooting lodge, now a hotel. Nearby is the small township of Shieldaig. Two yachts are anchored in the bay.
Queen Victoria visited the area in 1877 and stayed at the nearby Loch Maree hotel. Since then tourists have been coming to enjoy the fine beaches and wonderful scenery. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century passenger steam ships regularly visited this coast with its many beautiful and safe anchorages.
There is another larger Shieldaig, 12 miles to the south, and a larger Loch Shieldaig, an inlet of Loch Torridon.PLACENAME:ShieldaigOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ROSSPERIOD:1910s; 1920sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:32411KEYWORDS:
