Road by Loch Maree

ID: QZP40_CARD_0948 DESCRIPTION: A sunlit road (A832) by Loch Maree in Wester Ross. To the right are rowing boats and a pier. The pier was used for the embarkation of MacBrayne's steamers. The loch has been popular with fishermen and visitors alike since Victorian days. It has the reputation of having the largest sea trout in Great Britain and its many islands attract numerous visitors every year. The fresh water Loch Maree is twelve miles long and extends from Kinlochewe to near Poolewe. Most of the loch is only about half a mile wide but broadens into about a mile in places. The loch is thought to have taken its name from the Irish saint Maelrubha who founded a monastery at nearby Applecross. St Maelrhuba later made his home on one of Loch Maree's islands, Isle Maree PLACENAME: Gairloch OLD COUNTY/PARISH: ROSS PERIOD: 1960s SOURCE: Highland Libraries COLLECTION: Highland Libraries' Postcard Collection Asset ID: 32870 KEYWORDS:
