Views of Invergordon

ID: QZP40_CARD_1028 DESCRIPTION: Several views of the town of Invergordon in East Ross-shire. The top two views are of the beach and promenade. One of the facilities the area offered was the swimming pool, shown top right. In the distance can be seen the Suitors of Cromarty, two rocks that emerge out of the firth, guarding the entrance to the harbour. The centre view shows Invergordon High Street, with the King Edward Fountain situated in the middle of the road. Unveiled by Mrs MacDonald the Provost's wife in 1904, the fountain was funded by the Amenities Association and marked the royal visit of King Edward VIII to Invergordon in 1902. The bottom views show Admiralty Pier and the Royal Navy fleet entering the Cromarty Firth. Invergordon's proximity to the Cromarty Firth has made it an ideal anchorage for ships. Its links with the Royal Navy date back to the 19th century and by the 20th century it was classed as an official base, playing host to the Home Fleet on many an occasion. During World War I Invergordon retained its position as a naval base, providing fuel and water for the Royal Navy. The naval base at Invergordon finally closed in 1956.
