St Duthus, Tain

ID: QZP40_CARD_1152 DESCRIPTION: St Duthus Collegiate Church in Tain. It was built between 1370 and 1458 to house the shrine of St Duthus or Duthac, an early medieval saint who was born in Tain. The original chapel of St Duthus had stood on the links on the north east side of the town. Its destruction by fire in 1427 hastened the completion of this new church in the town centre. The ruins of another smaller church stand at its south-east corner. In medieval times the collegiate church was an important place of pilgrimage, its most famous visitor being James IV who came regularly between 1493 and 1513. After the Reformation in 1560, the pilgrimages stopped and the building became the parish church. With the building of a new parish church in 1815, the collegiate church fell into disrepair but it was restored in the 1870s when new stained glass windows were added. It now forms part of the 'Tain Through Time' visitor centre.
