ID:QZP40_CARD_1355DESCRIPTION:The pier at Tanera, one of the Summer Isles lying opposite Badentarbat Bay near Achiltibuie. The picture is a reproduction of one of William Daniell's steel engravings in the book 'A Voyage Round Great Britain Undertaken Between the Years 1813 and 1823' by Richard Ayton and William Daniell.
Tanera Mor is the largest of the Summer Isles and had a population of 119 in 1881. Like Ullapool, it was a successful herring fishing port in the early 19th century but suffered the same decline when the herring deserted Loch Broom. It is no longer permanently inhabited, although a number of holiday homes are evident. The island operates its own postal service and issues Summer Isles stamps.
As well as Tanera Mor (Big Tanera), there are a Tanera Beag (Little Tanera) and about two dozen smaller islands in the Summer Isles group. Some of them can be accessed by boat from Achiltibuie or Ullapool during the summer months. They are popular with nature lovers who come to see the birds, flowers, seals and porpoises. The naturalist Sir Frank Fraser Darling (1903-1979) studied the wildlife in and around Loch Broom for many years and wrote ' Island Farm' based on his experience of farming on Tanera between 1936 and 1944.PLACENAME:Summer IslesDISTRICT:LcohbroomOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ROSS: LochbroomCREATOR (AV):William DaniellPERIOD:1820sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries - Illustrated postcardsAsset ID:33281KEYWORDS:
