Stack Polly and Monarchs of the Glen

Stack Polly and Monarchs of the Glen

ID: QZP40_CARD_1515 DESCRIPTION: The hill known as Stack Polly (Gaelic 'Stac Pollaidh'), which takes its name from the nearby River Polly, meaning 'river of pools'. It lies about eleven miles north of Ullapool in the Coigach district. Although not particularly high at only 2009 feet (613 metres), it has a distinctive shape and is popular with hill walkers. The Monarchs of the Glen are the stags in the foreground of this photograph. The title 'Monarch' is given to a stag with 16 points on his antlers (a point is defined as a projection of at least an inch from base to tip). A stag with 14 points is an 'Imperial' stag and one with 12 points is a 'Royal' stag.
