ID:QZP40_CARD_1697DESCRIPTION:Postcard of the fishing fleet arriving back in Wick Harbour.
Once one of the main herring ports in the north of Scotland, Wick harbour sheltered hundreds of boats. At times there were fifteen thousand people in Wick including the fishermen and the women cleaning and packing the fish.
A Royal Burgh from 1589, the town of Wick has even more ancient origins, as shown by its name which comes from the Norse "Vic", the word for bay. It lies on the north east coast of Scotland 19 miles south of John o' Groats.PLACENAME:WickOLD COUNTY/PARISH:CAITHNESS: WickSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:33619KEYWORDS:
