ID:QZP40_CARD_1897DESCRIPTION:View of Dornoch in winter. Dornoch stands at the mouth of the Dornoch Firth and was once the administrative capital of Sutherland. It is now a seaside resort, offering two golf courses, a sandy beach, various hotels and a variety of shops. Its historic buildings include Dornoch Cathedral, a bishop's palace, a courthouse and an old town jail.
Dornoch Cathedral can be seen in the top left of the photograph. It was founded by Gilbert of Moravia (or Moray), Bishop of Caithness, in the thirteenth century. The cathedral was the victim of fire in 1570, when the Mackays of Strathnaver burnt much of the town of Dornoch. The building remained roofless until 1616, when parts of the Cathedral were re-roofed to be used as the parish church. The present building is the result of restoration ordered by Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, and undertaken by William Burn, in 1835-37. Dornoch Cathedral today is a parish church in the Church of Scotland.PLACENAME:DornochOLD COUNTY/PARISH:SUTHERLAND: DornochSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:33812KEYWORDS:
