Skibo Castle

Skibo Castle

ID: QZP40_CARD_2058 DESCRIPTION: The original Skibo Castle was built in the 13th century as a residence for the Bishop of Caithness and remained so until 1545. The present castle stands on the site of the Bishop's residence. It was purchased by Andrew Carnegie in 1895 who would go on to hire the firm of Ross and Macbeth to both upgrade some of the existing buildings as well as design new ones. The Castle stayed in the Carnegie family until 1982. In 1990 it was bought by the businessman, Peter de Savary, who turned the castle and estate into a luxury hotel and private members club (which, at the time of writing (2023) it still is).
