ID:QZP40_CARD_2263DESCRIPTION:Kyle of Lochalsh seems to cling to the coast, the bare hills creating a stark backdrop to the village, seen here from across the strait on Skye. A steamer, possibly the Loch Seaforth, is moored alongside the railway pier. Kyle was a regular port of call for the MacBrayne steamers which carried freight, passengers and mail up and down the west coast of Scotland, providing a lifeline service to many of the more remote locations. The ferry which plied between Kyle and Kyleakin on Skye can also be seen making its way towards the slipway just below the hotel. The Station Hotel, later renamed the Lochalsh Hotel, was extended over the years from a large house in the early part of the 20th century, to a four storey building, even larger than is pictured here.
To the right of the pier, along the shore, are various buildings connected to the fishing industry. The area was once known as Fernbank Works, where fish curing was carried out, and a number of the sheds also provided accommodation for transient workers.PLACENAME:Kyle of LochalshDISTRICT:South West RossOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ROSS: LochalshPERIOD:1940s; 1950sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:34163KEYWORDS:
