ID:QZP40_CARD_2378DESCRIPTION:Dunvegan Castle rises from a rocky outcrop on the shores of Loch Dunvegan, the present building having been much extended and altered since the 13th century original fort was constructed. The MacLeods once owned large tracts of land throughout the Hebrides, but the estate is confined now to Skye, with the Castle and surrounding gardens forming the hub for Clan activities. The MacLeod Estate still employs large numbers of staff, particularly in the tourist season, but hopefully shotguns are less in evidence these days.PLACENAME:DunveganDISTRICT:SkyeOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: DuirinishPERIOD:1920s; 1930sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:34285KEYWORDS:
