ID:QZP40_CARD_2443DESCRIPTION:Portree Loch is pictured here, a mile long extension of the sheltered Bay which opens off the Sound of Raasay. The loch is nearly dry at low tide, limiting its use as an anchorage, and despite the construction of a pier, large vessels have always had to anchor closer to the mouth of the Bay and ferry passengers ashore. The view was taken looking south towards Glen Varagill and the Cuillin in the distance, from Sron a' Mhill, the Point of the Hill. This peninsula is a central feature of Portree, often referred to as the Meall or, rather unromantically as the Lump, and remains a popular short walk with spectacular views from all sides, as well as being the location for the Skye Highland GamesPLACENAME:PortreeDISTRICT:SkyeOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESSCREATOR (AV):J Valentine & Co.PERIOD:1920s; 1930sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:34347KEYWORDS:
