ID:QZP40_CARD_2539DESCRIPTION:Sligachan has long been considered the mountaineering centre of Skye, with many walkers, climbers and tourists making their way into the Cuillin from this access. The ridge rising above Sligachan creates a spectacular backdrop with the steep tapering cone of Sgurr nan Gillean 3165ft (964m) dominating. Although one of the most difficult, Sgurr nan Gillean was one of the first to be climbed. In 1836 local ghillie Duncan MacIntyre and JD Forbes, Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh climbed the southeast ridge which became known as the Tourist Route. Beware, even by this 'easier' route, great care must be taken on this hard, exposed scramblePLACENAME:SligachanOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESSDATE OF IMAGE:1949PERIOD:1940sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:34445KEYWORDS:
