The Cuillins from Sligachan, Skye

ID: QZP40_CARD_2539 DESCRIPTION: Sligachan has long been considered the mountaineering centre of Skye, with many walkers, climbers and tourists making their way into the Cuillin from this access. The ridge rising above Sligachan creates a spectacular backdrop with the steep tapering cone of Sgurr nan Gillean 3165ft (964m) dominating. Although one of the most difficult, Sgurr nan Gillean was one of the first to be climbed. In 1836 local ghillie Duncan MacIntyre and JD Forbes, Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh climbed the southeast ridge which became known as the Tourist Route. Beware, even by this 'easier' route, great care must be taken on this hard, exposed scramble PLACENAME: Sligachan OLD COUNTY/PARISH: INVERNESS DATE OF IMAGE: 1949 PERIOD: 1940s SOURCE: Highland Libraries COLLECTION: Highland Libraries' Postcard Collection Asset ID: 34445 KEYWORDS:
