The Nairn Golf Course was founded in 1887 by Robert Finlay, an Edinburgh-born advocate who rose to become the Lord Chancellor of Britain and a Viscount. Initially designed by Andrew Simpson, Keeper of the Green at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Course, it was later revised and extended by Tom Morris. In 1899 a second golf club, Nairn Dunbar Golf Club, was founded on land to the east of the River Nairn.
