Summer clouds over Ben Loyal and the Kyle of Tongue

Summer clouds over Ben Loyal and the Kyle of Tongue

ID: QZP40_CARD_3732 DESCRIPTION: Ben Loyal is an isolated mountain of 764 m in Sutherland, the north-western tip of the Scottish Highlands. It is a Corbett located south of the Kyle of Tongue, and provides good views of the Kyle, Loch Loyal to the east, and Ben Hope to the west. It has a distinctive shape due to the four rocky peaks, the highest of which is called An Caisteal. To the north of An Caisteal is the 712 m Sgòr Chaonasaid, to the south is Bheinn Bheag (744 m) and to the west is the ridge of Sgòr a Chèirich, 644 m at its highest point. The fourth peak is the 568 m Sgòr Fionnaich. Tongue (Scottish Gaelic: Tunga from Old Norse Tunga) is a coastal village in northwest Highland, Scotland (in the western part of the former county of Sutherland.) Contrary to popular belief, it does not refer to the shape of the Kyle of Tongue (though the kyle can be described as "tongue-shaped"), but 'tunga' as a geographical term refers to a piece of land shaped like a spit or tongue. That particular piece of land, on which the village and the kyle are located, is the terminal moraine of the Kyle of Tongue glacier.
