ID:QZP40_CARD_3895DESCRIPTION:This postcard is titled, 'Drumochter Pass, the Great North Road'. The Drumochter Pass is located on what is now the A9 road, to the south of Dalwhinnie.
The Drumochter Pass is the highest point on both the road and the railway between Perth and Inverness. The A9 crosses the pass at a height of 460m (1508ft) above sea level. As the pass can be subject to some severe weather there are snow gates near Dalwhinnie to close the road when needed. The railway line crosses the pass at a height of 452m (1480ft), making it the highest point of Britain's railway network.PLACENAME:DrumochterOLD COUNTY/PARISH:PERTHDATE OF IMAGE:1932PERIOD:1930sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:35733KEYWORDS:
